HOOKS

All hooks are handmade from an original sculpture using a process called cold casting. Metal powder and polyurethane resin are blended and poured into a silicone rubber mold of the sculpture.  Once demolded, the hook is polished and waxed to give that real metal shine!

Sasquatch Hook

This slightly confused Sasquatch was a joy to make! It took many iterations to get to this final version.  I just couldn't decide on the pose and the hairyness style. I opted for a chill, lanky and slouchy look, a bit like myself! The hook base smoothly transitions into rocky terrain peppered with mushrooms. How does he evade us!

Moose Hook

After moving to Prince George BC this past summer, I thought it would be fitting to sculpt a very northern animal. Found across Canada and the USA, this big animal deserved a big hook! Because moose shed their antlers every winter, I opted to sculpt a moose with growing spring antlers. This ultimately reduced complexity of the mold and casting process.

The moose is stripping bark off a log, and this was an ideal way to frame the hook and allow the separate hooks to be "connected". As is common in my hooks, I always want the subject to not be hidden by the hanging objects. Even though its antlers will stay the same size, I hope this moose will grow in the hearts of many across the country.

Bison Hook

My first encounter with a bison was in Custer State Park in South Dakota. Seeing how massive these animals are made a lasting impression on me. They are huge! Having collected many bison art items , I decided to try my hand at creating a hook. Having a cow and her calf side by side was an opportunity to try various textures and really accentuate features. I didn't just want to sculpt fur.  I had fun with the calf, giving it a spiky hairdo and little goatee.  I added some peaks near the hook to represent how bison used to roam the plains within sight of mountains.

Quail Hook

Quails Quails Quails! 5 curious hand sculpted quails just hanging out on a fence. Quails are easily recognized by the feather cluster on their head known as a plume.  Most quail art incorporates silhouettes to try and show the plume. I tried to organize the quails in ways as to showcase the plume as well as bring some fun to these quirky birds! I struggled at first on how to position the quails on the fence as to showcase that feature. It was a challenge creating a feather that would be recognizable and would be strong enough to be cast. And why not have a quail butt right in the middle of it all!

Tree Frog Hook

After spending 2 weeks researching and sculpting this little guy, I can honestly say that every body part was my newest favorite. From the big eyes, to long and skinny limbs, to the padded fingers... this sculpture just ended up being a lot of fun. The frog is posed on a bamboo stem which is not as smooth as it looks. Another great addition to my collection of hooks!

Banana Slug Hook

Watch your step! Raising awareness for the hundreds of Banana slugs that get trampled and rolled on by bicycles on the west coast! This one found itself on top of a coat hook. This was a great subject as slugs have an incredible amount of texture and features. Next time you see a slug, have a good look at the body, the belly, the body shell, antennas; you'll be amazed!

Lazy Bear Hook

I've been lucky so far in British Columbia in that I have never come across a black or grizzli bear while hiking or biking. But I have discovered loads of wild berries. I feel that we are somewhat alike, we both love to forage for berries! This hook shows the front of a bear resting on a pair of logs.  Cold cast in iron, it is a great addition to any home or lodge trying to capture life in the mountains!

Log Hook

This hook was inspired by all the fallen trees in British Columbia. The forests are so green and these dead trees still continue to give as other trees and plants just grow in them. The two vary distinct textures in the hook lends itself well to being cast in two colors. I achieved the two colors by first casting the interior in bronze and then overcasting in iron. More labour intense, but very special!

Sloths are amazing, enough said. This is the second hook in my collection and it remains the most popular. It was originally sculpted in Sculpey.

Turtle Hook

I was inspired to sculpt a turtle after visiting the turtle hospital in the Florida Keys. Although they mostly saved sea turtles, all turtles have their own survival challenges, be it cars or boats. I decided to sculpt a land based turtle just peaking out of its shell. It's an unconventional pose, but it allowed me to focus on the head and all the texture surrounding it. It remains one of my favorite hooks.
